JOHANNESBURG - The JSE closed firmer in volatile trade on Monday as industrials and larger mining groups gained on the weaker rand, while gold shares were sold off on the stronger dollar and weaker spot price. The rand lost more than 2% against the dollar in intraday trade after comments by Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane on the independence of the Reserve Bank.

JOHANNESBURG - The JSE closed lower on Thursday in its worst week so far this year ahead of the long weekend as gold and platinum shares retreated on a firmer dollar and lower commodity prices. Losses were broad based, with retailers, banks and property stocks ending the day lower. Market heavyweight Naspers dragged the market down on a disappointing trading update.
